The Community Dental Center in downtown Waterville will again be accessible to individuals with mobility impairments as a result of DRC's advocacy. The Dental Center is located on the 3rd floor of a building owned by the Waterville Regional Arts and Community Center (WRACC). In the fall of 2008 the wheelchair lift that provided access to the Dental Center was condemned. Lucretia Smith, who was a patient of the Dental Center, was told that the lift was broken and it would not be replaced. Because of her rheumatoid arthritis, Ms. Smith is unable to use stairs, which meant that she would no longer be able to get dental care from the center. DRC represented Ms. Smith in a case of discrimination before the Maine Human Rights Commission, which found reasonable grounds to believe that the Dental Center and WRACC discriminated against Ms. Smith by not repairing or replacing the lift. Both the Dental Center and WRACC worked to secure funding for a new lift, and the parties recently reached an agreement that requires a new lift to be installed and available for use by May 12, 2010. |
